Two JAX safeties deep in parallel alignment. Mahomes sees it — he knows where the void will be.

The Cover 2 Hole

Thornton runs to 19 yards depth on the right boundary. Oluokun (LB) can't get that deep. Murray (S) has the entire deep half to cover. The hole opens.

Anticipation Throw

Ball arrives as Thornton clears the linebacker zone. Both Murray AND Oluokun converge — proving the catch was in the void between their zones. 24 yards. Coverage math exploited.

The Full Picture

Q1, 1st & 10 from the KC 22. Under center — not shotgun. The owner spotted it first: two JAX safeties deep in parallel alignment pre-snap. This is Cover 2 Zone, not Cover 1. And Mahomes reads it instantly. Cover 2's weakness is the hole between the deep safety and the underneath linebacker — typically 18-22 yards along the sideline. Watch Thornton run directly into that void. Murray (S, #29) has the deep half but can't squeeze down. Oluokun (LB, #23) has the curl/flat but can't get that deep. Thornton sits right between them at 19 air yards. The fact that BOTH Murray and Oluokun make the tackle at the KC 46 proves the catch happened in the Cover 2 hole — both defenders converged because neither could get there alone. That's coverage math: the void exists by design, and Mahomes found it in 2.1 seconds. CPOE of 43.4 with 19 air yards into the Cover 2 hole. This wasn't a read of a single-high safety — it was a read of two-deep shells and the structural weakness between them. Pre-snap identification + anticipation throw = textbook quarterback play. EPA: +1.82.

What To Look For

Cover 2 Zone puts two safeties deep in parallel. The weakness is the hole between the deep safety and the underneath LB — typically 18-22 yards along the boundary. When you see two safeties deep and the QB throws to that depth on the sideline, he attacked the Cover 2 hole. Look for two defenders making the tackle — that's the tell that the ball landed in the void between their zones.
